United Kingdom: Independent Affordable Housing Supply Review

The independent review of affordable housing supply in Wales offers an opportunity to re-shape our direction of travel in supplying affordable homes that are fit for purpose and planned in a way which intelligently uses data that prompts greater collaboration across the sector. The review rightly looks at some of the most pressing contemporary questions facing policy-makers and practitioners within the housing sector in Wales and there is an understandable focus on securing the longterm financial future of the sector against the need to deliver more homes, at pace, to sustainable standards. Throughout our response we have sought to highlight wherever possible, the broader impact of housing and the need to consider how stronger links across the government‟s portfolio and remit in areas such as healthcare and economic infrastructure can be cemented. The links with healthcare alone offer a raft of opportunities to utilise the expertise and resources across sectors. Reducing delayed transfer of care, GP admissions, enabling independent living and managing longterm chronic conditions are all areas where a heavy focus by housing professionals is producing excellent results across Wales. It is important that the review prompts leaders at a national level to realise the benefits of such approaches and ensure housing‟s role is a prominent features in corresponding strategies.
