Cities are home to more than half of the world’s population, and they are expected to add another 2.5 billion new residents by 2050. They face increasing environmental pressures and infrastructure needs—and growing demands from residents to deliver a better quality of life and to do so at a sustainable cost (McKinsey & Company, 2018). Sustainable housing planning is a relatively new concept that many cities have embraced. However, many are still struggling to combine or adapt their strategic plans to incorporate the sustainability aspects (Abidin et al., 2013). There is a need to create a holistic housing system which is self-sustaining and, in this context, the urban experts have shifted their focus on sustainable housing practices in urban areas, so as to promote self-reliant communities in urban cities.
