In terms of population it is the largest country in the South Asian region, and home to the world’s largest population of the very poor. One-third of India’s population lives below the World Bank defined poverty line of US $2 per day. An estimated 27% of the population falls below the Government of India’s poverty line of US $10 per month in urban areas and US $8 per month in rural areas. This forms the major social challenge to the urban planners.
