International Practice in Planning for Affordable Housing in Australia

This research project examines the ways that planning systems and planning policies impact on the provision of affordable housingThe report has been prepared during a period of lively national debate about the overall impacts of urban planning regulation on housing supply and affordability. Underpinning this debate are concerns about the housing supply implications of urban containment policies (Beer 2004); perceptions that the planning system is too complex, leading to expensive delays (HIA 2003); and arguments that planning related charges and fees are excessive (PCA 2006). The land use planning process can influence the supply and range of housing produced both in new development and redeveloping areas.
