An Assessment of Sanitation situation in Mukuru Kwa Njenga Informal settlement

This assessment of the sanitation situation in Mukuru Kwa Njenga mainly targeted the households in the Sisal area living within a 60-meter radius of the proposed site. Mukuru is a Special Planning Area (SPA), hence no other development other than the recommended one is allowed to take place. This is a clear revelation of how unique the idea of sanitation for all is important. This assessment aimed at looking at levels and the existing infrastructures such as water supply, sanitation facilities, health, and health status of the various households. This rapid assessment also looked into associated factors such as frequency, cost, distance covered, quality, and the challenges and remedies to such issues. The bio-sanitation model to be developed in the Sisal area is a multi-purpose unit and an environmentally friendly initiative as the by –by-products will also be useful in the development of other sectors, especially urban agriculture.
