In the rural areas the challenge is that of poor quality housing. Kenya’s urban housing demand is estimated at about 150,000 units with an estimated annual average supply of only 35,000 while an estimated 300,000 housing units require to be improved annually in rural areas. If factors that constrain housing production are not addressed, the current situation is likely to be sustained or worsen. Housing development in most urban areas has been dominated by private developers and contractors over the years, with the Government playing a more facilitative role. The private sector being a profit making sector has over concentrated its efforts in provision of housing units for the high income and those meant for the middle income are never affordable for the targeted group.
