Affordable living presents a challenge for many resort communities around the world. In the Resort Municipality of Tofino, BC, increasing growth in tourism is bringing the issue of affordable living to the forefront of local politics and community conversations. Unlike resort communities like Whistler, BC and Jackson, Wyoming, Tofino has not yet initiated a comprehensive affordable housing strategy. This is interesting considering the District of Tofino has struggled with the issue of affordable housing since the mid 1990s (K. Thicke, personal communication, April 19, 2015). Members of the community believe affordability within the region has reached a state of “crisis” after so many years of inaction and that the issue must be addressed imminently to prevent further disintegration of Tofino’s social fabric and sense of community (K. Thicke, personal communication, April 19, 2015).
