The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development presents this report on 17 projects with unique features of sustainable construction within Native American settings. When sustainable housing is implemented within Native American communities, the result can be healthier, more energy-efficient, and climatically appropriate housing stock and incorporates strong cultural and historic tribal design elements. These projects featured in this effort from HUD’s Sustainable Construction in Indian Country initiative show the emerging transformation in tribal housing. They not only employ sustainable technologies, materials, and low-flow plumbing fixtures, structurally insulated panels, stormwater retention, and clustered housing plans. The best practices that emerge from these case studies give to innovative ways that tribal housing providers are using housing improvement, including green housing, to overcome challenges related to funding, infrastructure capacity, loss of cultural traditions, and economic development.
