The city of Los Angeles has seen an increase in people experiencing homelessness as of 2018. Los Angeles metro area had one of the largest populations experiencing homelessness in the country of approximately 52,765 people. While housing insecurity affects various populations, female-identifying people who experience homelessness face unique challenges. It is estimated in 2018, there were just over 9,500 females of different age groups experiencing homelessness in the City of Los Angeles, resultantly, 30% of the city’s entire population experienced homelessness.
The prevalence of female homelessness has multiple reasons such as unemployment, various physical and mental health issues, lack of social support, and domestic violence. These challenges are further intensified by the lack of safe, available and affordable housing in the City of Los Angeles. Especially, women were experiencing homelessness with age group 31 to 40 years old and 51 to 60 years old and representing 26% of the population.
