India is the second largest producer of bamboo in the world and has vast traditional knowledge of bamboo based communities with the best bamboo artisans in the world. Use of Bamboo for buildings is part of age- old tradition in India. Because of the distribution of various climatic zones in India, the species of bamboo found in each state are quite different. Hence, India has various bamboo building typologies across the country depending on the climatic zone and the species found in the particular state. This paper will chart the various traditional typologies of bamboo buildings in India and their evolution through time to the present, influenced by the new interest, research and development in the material globally.
