In retrospect, 2012 may be seen as the high water mark of financial inclusion as we know it. Much of the commitment to date has come from policymakers, often at very senior levels as the excerpt from the June 2012 Los Cabos G20 Summit Declaration demonstrates. The Declaration contained further commitments and encouragement from the assembled Presidents and Prime Ministers on the topic of financial inclusion. And the support is not limited to G20 countries either. The Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) which was founded in 2009 as a platform to encourage south-south learning and engagement on how to promote financial inclusion now counts 88 member institutions from across the developing world.
