The objective of this Guideline is to achieve an appropriate level of earthquake resistance in non-engineered load-bearing masonry buildings constructed in Nepal. Following this Guideline does not render masonry buildings able to totally withstand any earthquake without any appreciable damage. However, it is intended to limit the damage to a level that does not threaten human lives and can be repaired quickly. This document includes suitable illustrations to explain the important points, sketches, and sufficient data to proportion the critical strength elements correctly. The requirements are based on design calculations of typical structures.

This document is intended to provide necessary guidelines to owners, builders, and masons when a masonry building is to be constructed without engaging professional engineers. However, professional designers could also use this guideline for the effective utilization of their time.
