Informal Settlement in Fiji – Situation Analysis

Informal Settlement in Fiji – Situation Analysis

Fiji is the first Melanesian country to cross the symbolic demographic milestone of more than 50% of the population residing in cities and towns.

Yet, informal settlements in Fiji have been a major feature of urban life for at least 40 years.

Close to 20% of the urban population lives in settlements with a diverse range of physical, legal, and social conditions that often do not meet basic human rights, are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, and represent the extremes of poverty and social exclusion in Fiji.

Informal Settlement in Fiji

This Settlement Situation Analysis (SSA) report related to informal settlement in Fiji is a key component of the multi-phase Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme (PSUP).

The PSUP is an initiative of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific Group of States (ACP) secretariat, funded by the European Union and implemented by UN-Habitat in 35 countries including five in the Pacific.

The People’s Community Network (PCN) has undertaken the research and reporting for the situation analysis for informal settlement in Fiji with the support of the Government of Fiji.

The Programme supports target 11.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is, “By 2030, ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums.”
