The people’s sewage system drained into the natural drainage system for the rest of Karachi. The OPP and the communities armed with OPP designs and estimates lobbied the government to convert the natural drains into box trunks with treatment plants at their ends. The government has been carrying this out not only in Orangi but in other areas as well. Local governments can support the process by building external development provided they accept the concept and train their staff in OPP-RTI methodology and in working with communities. So far, local governments have invested US$ 4.06 million in external development for these projects.
