Shelter Afrique Final Report 2022
Shelter Afrique Final Report 2022 states that after a year ravaged by the pandemic, 2021 was poised to be the year of recovery. Economies had been severely impacted by Covid-19 and were slowly returning to normal. The discovery of Covid-19 vaccines and their administration to citizens accelerated this process. Over the full year, the global economy is expected to have grown by 5.9%.
During the same period, the world experienced significant climate change. Four key indicators of climate change broke records: greenhouse gas concentrations, sea level rise, ocean warmth and ocean acidification. Studies show that human activities, particularly extractive industries, are responsible for these changes. We can no longer ignore the role of the built environment in climate change. Amid the challenges that this critical period presents us with, many opportunities present themselves. Shelter-Afrique was established 41 years ago to support the provision of affordable building infrastructure. It is therefore a major stakeholder in the built environment. To mitigate climate change, we must provide decent and affordable housing while adopting a more sustainable approach to energy consumption and adopting more adaptive, sustainable and innovative buildings. As we adapt to this direction, Shelter-Afrique will therefore focus on the following key areas: offering the EDGE Discovery Workshop to developers in Africa to accelerate the development of resource-efficient housing, promoting the use of alternative building technologies, encouraging innovative design, and engaging multilateral organizations to provide green financing in green projects.
