This document is based on Sub Saharan Note on Housing. Sub-Saharan African (SSA) comprises 48 African countries with a total population of about 740m. It does not include the five Maghreb countries (i.e. Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Mauritania) and Egypt. This paper talks about some commonalities and various diversities prevailing in the Sub-Saharan group of countries in financial sectors and housing sector. Sub Saharan Note on Housing deals with Housing Finance Institutions in Africa, Market conditions for housing finance institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, The mortgage markets in Sub-Saharan Africa, Operating housing finance institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa and Operating housing finance institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa etc. Low market penetration and limited access to financial services is a predominant feature of SSA financial sectors. Only a small fraction of the populations across the region is served by a formal financial institution. Mortgage lending is about 1 to 2 % of GDP in most SSA countries (except South Africa, Namibia and Ghana).
