The City of Toronto, Canada, is now the 6th most expensive city in the world in terms of rental housing. In the last decade, the cost of housing has far outpaced income growth, with house prices growing four times faster and rent growing two times faster. Population growth is also outpacing the supply of new rental units, leading to increases in homelessness and demand for social housing. Those who can access rental housing have been forced to deal with high costs, tenure instability, and overcrowded, unsafe, or poor-quality living situations.
