Inadequate Housing is one of the major social issues affecting the low-income groups in South Africa. The housing backlog is nationwide and very pressing and therefore approached in general terms and top-down. Proposals resulting from this strategy usually claim to be universally applicable. Strategies to improve the living conditions of the masses, moreover, are usually approached from one angle or professional discipline, suggesting models of implementation that take for granted the functioning of connected disciplines. RDP (Redevelopment Program) is such a biased strategy. This study approaches the issue of low-income housing from the angle of local circumstances. It aims at integrating low-income housing into an overall vision of a sustainable future for a specific village. It wants to contribute to an implementing model for the construction of sustainable houses for the poor as a basis for further growth and integrated social and economic development.
