Kenya is facing an increasing growth of informal settlements in her urban centers. As rapid urbanization takes its toll, so has the development and growth of slums. More than 34% of Kenya’s total population lives in urban areas and of this, more than 71% is confined in informal settlements (UN-Habitat, 2009). This number will continue to increase unless a serious and concerted action by all relevant stakeholders is undertaken. These unprecedented rates of urbanization can be linked to massive migratory movements as well as to natural growth, challenging urban planning and thereby causing environmental problems with far reaching effects. While the low quality of housing and the general lack of basic infrastructure especially sanitation, drainage, access to energy and clean water supply result in poor social and environmental conditions, high levels of unemployment and low income give rise to conflicts.
