Punjab is now the fifth major urbanized state of India. Now by residence one out of every three persons in Punjab is urban. Due to  this has resulted in high population density in urban areas and a number of towns/urban agglomerations have come up during 1991-2001 and distance between towns has decreased due to growth of new towns and expansion of urban areas.
